RESEARCH INTEREST

My first contribution to knowledge in retina subspecialty published in Eye-Nature was titled: Retinal diseases in Ibadan. The most common retina disease in Ibadan was the disease of the macula and macular degeneration which was thought to be rare in Africans. Some years later, other rare diseases reported in Ibadan and published for the first time are Best disease, Stargardts disease and Idiopathic Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy. Recently we published our findings of significant retinopathy in hypertensive patients. Previous studies in Nigerians reported its rarity. This study attracted research grants from The BO Oshuntokun Trust and The University of Ibadan Senate Grant. The author also published a book, an Atlas of retinal diseases in Nigerians after undergoing a sabbatical leave at the University of Lagos.

We published that age-related macular degeneration is not uncommon in Africans in Ibadan. The blinding wet form of the disease occur more commonly in women. Idiopathic Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy, a disease of Asians was reported for the first time in Ibadan. Patients who are mainly women presented with sudden visual loss from hemorrhagic retinal detachment. Chloroquine, a common antimalarial drug was reported by us to cause significant retinal damage by people who abused the drug. The pattern of presentation was reported in Eye- Nature. Retinopathy of prematurity was thought to be uncommon in Africans. We reported and was able to capture the disease on mobile phone camera for the first time in Nigeria by a method popularized in Nigeria by the author. The findings were reported in the European Journal of Ophthalmology and presented by the author at the World Congress of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2016.

Barriers to setting up a retinal unit and diabetic retinopathy screening were identified and published. Appropriate recommendations were made. We reported success with scleral buckle surgery for retinal detachment in Ibadan, an inexpensive procedure and recommend the procedure for Africans.

Future direction include research in retinopathy of prematurity screening and diabetic retinopathy screening with digital photography. Screening will provide appropriate data required for planning control programs for these diseases in Ibadan. Mobile phones fundoscopy for telemedicine is also considered for the future.
